This past weekend the folks in the US observed Memorial Day. As I was re-reading a couple of my favorite SVM fics that involved soldiers during war-time, I realized that the Sookieverse actually possess several fics that are set during major wars or involve soldiers. Whether intentional or not, many writers either educated the reader or shed light on soldier life through their fanfiction story.
So I asked my blog readers, fanfiction fans on Twitter, and the gals on the Sookieverse to recommend some of their favorite war-time fics. Here are the 10 fics that I've called the "Four Star Ranked Fics" that the fans dubbed noteworthy to mention. I've also included each recommendation that I've received for the 10 stories. Enjoy!
A World Away by Suki59
- Sookie is a Nurse and Eric is a pilot during WW II. They met before the war at a dance but Eric is deployed, and Sookie is dating Bill. They met again when Sookie is captured by the German's, and Eric helps her to escape. Eric was injured before the rescue and Sookie helps nurse him back to health in an old home they find. They fall in love and hide from the war until Eric is healed. Eric returns to the war and Sookie is sent back to the hospital train. They go months without seeing each and lose contact when Sookie is sent home. Later they reunite and return to the place where they feel in love. -- vikingfangtasies
- This story is complete and I just found it this week when I was looking for new things to read. This author had just completed a story I loved, so I went to try her other stories, most of which I had read. This one happens during WWII. Eric is training to be a pilot and Sookie is training to be a nurse. They complete training and both end up in France. I enjoy how they manage to hold faith with each other in spite of the craziness of the world and when they know so little of each other in some ways. I love this story too. *sighs* -- Northwoman
Hamburger Hill by FarDareIsMai2
- "Why would an angel want to touch someone as broken as me, except for duty? And yet, I pray for just that." Beautiful words by a man who's impaired from the war, yet finds his love. -- Sunkisz
- This was the winner in the Summer of '69 contest, and if you check the reviews, you'll see why. Hamburger Hill is the sweet tale of an injured soldier returning home from Vietnam and finding himself drawn to a broken-hearted young nurse. They are both healed by the love they find together. It's beautifully-written and moving, making it a beloved favorite in out little library. -- Suki59
- This was the 2nd ever A/H fic I read during my FDM binge. A great story about a soldier who was wounded during the Vietnam War and found himself under the care of a very caring nurse. I haven't read many of the Summer of 69 fics but this one was the winner of that contest. It weaves such a wonderful story and it's no wonder that FDM storytelling skills are awarded time and time again. :) -- Sapfirerose
Leap of Faith by Missus T
- By just reading this currently on-going story's description, you will not get that it fits in this category ... but it does. See, Eric is a Marine during the current war, the war in Iraq and Afghanistan. And while no one dies ... this story took a patriotic turn that I don't even think the writer thought it would. I won't spoil this story but will say that chapters 19 through 21 brings up family and military life during times of war and conflict. And it will also remind you a little bit of the Hurt Locker. Missus T is doing a great job weaving this tale and she has this knack of writing that makes you want more. -- Sapfirerose
Letter From Home by Ehee
- This story has a special place in my heart because it was one of the first fanfics I ever read on fanfic.net and what an introduction it was. This story is sweet and sexy and heartfelt, you can feel the emotion coming off the page and it shows in the writing and the storytelling. It is a simple tale of boy meets girl, girl loses boy to war, girl finds out she's pregnant and boys long and terrible jouney back to his family. Read this and weep (in a really, really good and positive way) -- vic_vega66
Picking Up the Pieces by Stealing Dreams
- I have enjoyed this story for such a long time. It is not yet complete. It is set during WWII. The Sookie in this story is smart and capable. Her perceptions about people are good, accurate and Eric is a nice guy. They are so sweet with each other, so supportive during a difficult time. I am such a crazy fan - I even researched birth control in the 1940s after reading this story! For me, stories are about the people, the relationsips, the emotions and this one takes me away. -- Northwoman
- Stealingdreams does a fantastic job capturing the WW2 era and developing rich, vibrant characters. Eric is hot, Pam is a firecracker, and Sookie is a strong, intelligent woman in a man's world. I recommend it very highly. -- Sallydoodle
Semper Fidelis by Angela4148 (Twilight)
- I'm fairly picky about the twifics that I read, and this is one that I really enjoyed. One of the things that I really liked, was that Angela was a Marine wife, so she knew what she was writing about first hand. In writing LOF I've had to research all kinds of things, but Angela has actually lived it. She does a great job of translating emotions onto the page, and her Bella and Edward are really well written.
*I've heard rumors that there's a sequel brewing, so read, review and offer suggestions and maybe Ang will crank one out! :) LOL -- Missus T
Sunshine of Your Love by FarDareisMai2
- This story was the first A/H story I read. I started reading fanfiction in June of 09, but decided to only read canon stories. Because of that, I didn't read any of the Summer of '69 stories people were posting. In October, I decided to go on an FDM binge starting from her last updated up to .. well HOFOF at the time. So this story was my cherry A/H and the first Summer of '69 fic I read. This story is awesome because it has all the hippy-ness of the 60s and also addresses the Vietnam War and the social climate of that time. The type of soldier Eric represents is one longing for a connection that he finds in a picture of an angel. FDM is an amazing story teller and her one-shots are amazing! -- Sapfirerose
- Vietnam era story that I'm quite proud of. *blush* I know most people are more familiar with Hamburger Hill, but I think I'm a little more "in love" with this E & S. -- fardareismai2
The Marine by At A Venture
- This was a stand-out in the Summer of '69 contest for me. It's a poignant peek into a very lonely Sookie's mind as she meets a soldier returning from the Vietnam War. It's touching and sweet and sad and a beautifully-written story. -- Suki59
The Ribbon by LindsayK
- The Host's Pick in the Naughty or Nice Contest. This one-shot contest entry is set in the 40's and a portion takes place during World War II. Eric and Sookie have been sweethearts since high school. Then the attack on Pearl Harbor happens and Eric and Jason, like many men did during that time, enlisted. LindsayK did a bit a research and Band of Brothers watching to set a wonderful visual for this setting. In a little over 7,000 words, Linds creates a world that has all the elements of respect, love, patriotism, and innocence of that period. I've already read the fic 3 times, if you haven't read it once, do it. You will love it. -- Sapfirerose
Waking Sleeping Giants by Nyah
- This is, hands down, the most unique and brilliant storyline I have ever seen developed from the SVM characters, and probably the most original story in our entire library. The vamps are out of the coffin and employed by the U.S. to tip the scales in the Vietnam War. It is dark and thought-provoking and written in a most unusual narrative style. If you haven't had the pleasure, go read it now. -- Suki59

Fantastic post! Thank you so much for your kind words about The Ribbon!
Love this post! So many stories I wasn't even aware of that I now need to add to the list of TBR. Thanks!
Wars always inspire great dramas. Separating from loved ones and facing death always up the stakes in a story. I'm proud to see my war story here among these great fanfics. Thanks Sapfirerose, for this special tribute to men and women in arms. Nicely done.
I know what you mean Suki59. The first two AH fic I ever read are in this list of wartime fics. There are so many ways to tell a story in a war-time setting. I'm sure these stories represent a smattering of what is a available in fanfiction.
